SUDDENLY

 

In a world filled with noise, the still, small voice of God can often be drowned out. We are surrounded by a cacophony of sounds—traffic, chatter, the constant hum of technology—that can overwhelm our senses and distract our spirits. Yet, amid this noise, there is a profound yearning to hear the voice that truly matters: the voice of God.

The Sound of Divine Movement

Before a mighty move of God, there is always a sound. This is a principle we see throughout Scripture. When God was about to do something significant, there was often a precursor, a sound that indicated His imminent action. Whether it was the sound of a rushing mighty wind at Pentecost (Acts 2:2) or the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees before David's victory over the Philistines (2 Samuel 5:24), these sounds signaled God's presence and His power at work.

The Sound of Silence

In 1 Kings 19:11-12, we find the prophet Elijah experiencing a divine encounter. God was not in the powerful wind, nor the earthquake, nor the fire. Instead, He was in the gentle whisper that followed. This passage reminds us that God's voice is often found in the quiet moments, away from the chaos of the world.

Seeking Divine Guidance

Psalm 119:133 says, "Order my steps in your word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me." This prayer encapsulates our desire for divine guidance. When we ask God to order our steps, we are seeking His direction in every aspect of our lives. We are acknowledging that His ways are higher than our ways, and His plans are greater than our own.

Walking in the Word

To have our steps ordered by God means to walk according to His Word. The Bible is not just a historical document or a collection of moral teachings; it is a living, breathing guide for our lives. Through Scripture, God speaks to us, instructs us, and reveals His will.

In Proverbs 3:5-6, we are told to "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." Trusting God and submitting to His Word requires faith and humility. It means letting go of our own understanding and allowing God's wisdom to lead us.

The Power of Obedience

Obedience to God's Word is not always easy. It requires discipline, patience, and a willingness to surrender our desires to His will. Yet, the rewards of obedience are immeasurable. When we walk in obedience, we experience the peace that surpasses all understanding, the joy that comes from knowing we are in God's will, and the confidence that He is leading us on the right path.

Listening for His Voice

To hear God's voice, we must cultivate a heart that listens. This means setting aside time for prayer and meditation, immersing ourselves in Scripture, and being still before the Lord. It means tuning out the noise of the world and tuning in to the frequency of Heaven.

In John 10:27, Jesus says, "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me." As His sheep, we have the privilege of hearing His voice and following His lead. But like sheep, we must stay close to our Shepherd, attentive to His guidance and responsive to His call.

A Prayer for Guidance

As we seek to hear the sound of God and have our steps ordered by His Word, let us pray:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, seeking Your guidance. Order our steps in Your Word, that we may walk in Your truth and follow Your path. Teach us how to be sensitive to Your sound, that we might receive revelation knowledge and be alerted to Your mighty moves. Help us to listen for Your voice in the midst of the noise and to trust in Your wisdom above our own. May Your Word be a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. In Jesus' name, we pray. In the stillness, in the quiet, may we find the sound of God guiding our every step.
