THE FIFTH DISTRACTION - NOISE

In Eden, after Adam and Eve ate the fruit, Scripture tells us they “heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day” (Genesis 3:8). But instead of stepping into His presence, they hid.

The voice of God that once brought comfort now stirred fear—and the noise of guilt, shame, and confusion drowned out the peace they had once known. From that day forward, humanity has wrestled with a problem: learning to hear God’s voice above all the noise.

Living in the Age of Noise

Today, our world is louder than ever. Not just literal noise, but digital, emotional, and mental noise:

  • The endless buzz of notifications.

  • The constant chatter of opinions on social media.

  • The inner noise of doubt, worry, and comparison.

We live in a culture that fears silence. We fill every empty moment with sound—music, podcasts, scrolling—anything to keep us from sitting still. But here’s the truth: if the enemy can keep us drowning in noise, he can keep us from hearing God.

God Speaks in the Stillness

Elijah discovered this in 1 Kings 19. He expected God to show up in the powerful wind, the earthquake, and the fire. But God wasn’t in the noise. Instead, He came in a gentle whisper.

That’s the danger of distraction by noise: we look for God in the chaos, while His voice is waiting in the quiet.

Choosing Silence Over Noise

Silence is uncomfortable because it forces us to face what’s really inside us. Yet it’s in those moments of stillness that God often does His deepest work.

Psalm 46:10 says it plainly: “Be still, and know that I am God.”
Stillness doesn’t just quiet the world—it reorients our hearts to the One who made it.

The Invitation

So here’s the challenge: Where is noise drowning out God’s whisper in your life? Maybe it’s time to turn off the notifications, mute the endless voices of opinion, and step into the quiet.

The Garden reminds us: God is still walking. God is still speaking. The question is—will we be still enough to listen?
